10 Sweet Valentine Gift Card Message Ideas

valentine-gift-card-main-graphic

Valentine’s Day isn’t really a romantic holiday around here.  My hubby has never been a practitioner of big romantic gestures, so ever since we welcomed our boys into our family, we have always treated Valentine’s Day as a great time to show them how very special they are to us!  I’m sure your sweetie daughters, granddaughters and nieces all know that they are important to you, but Valentine’s Day can be a fun time to celebrate your how much she means to you & make her feel extra special.

For our boys, Valentine’s Day has always been a day that we shower them with love and hugs and kisses and special little things like heart-shaped pancakes and special little notes.  Flowers, chocolate and conversation hearts sometimes make their way into our family day, but really it’s the little gestures of love and appreciation that make the day one of my favorite days of the year.

One of my favorite family traditions centers around the little mailbox we got each boy when they were little.  It’s a little red metal mail box (it’s absolutely precious), and each of our kiddos sets it outside of their room on February 1st.  Then every day through February 14th I leave them a new little note letting them know how much I appreciate them and love them.  I make sure to let them know what I love about them and why they are so special to our family.  I also leave little candies, toys, and other special goodies in their mailboxes.  Wouldn’t a keepsake pearl bracelet make the perfect gift for her mail box on Valentine’s day???

If you’re stumped on what to write to your special little Valentine, here are 10 Valentine’s Day gift card messages to help you show your littles how very much you love them!  There are 10 different messages & then below them I have included the messages written out in case you want to copy & paste any of the messages into your special gift card.

All you really need to do is to take a little extra time to make your little one feel happy and let her know she’s loved.  How about a special family dinner that you all make together?  A family walk around the block or to the park?  Or a quick trip out for her favorite ice cream (this is my boys’ favorite).  Family dance parties are also a big hit at our house.  Even now that the boys are older, they love being totally crazy and weird dancing around the house with hubby & I!

One thing that was surprising to me was that my youngest loves to pick me little bouquets of flowers for my office desk.  So I decided to pick him a little bouquet for his desk.  He was absolutely thrilled!  There are infinite ways to celebrate with your Valentine!

Whatever your plans for Valentine’s Day, start a fun tradition that you can repeat year after year.  Especially now that the boys are older, it’s fun to see how they’ve hung on to even the smallest of traditions – never forgetting *anything*.  Seriously, they have the minds of elephants!!  So have some fun with your little Valentine!!  They’ll remember it forever. ♥

Fun things to do with your kids when it’s cold outside

Fun things to do on cold days

January means that winter is in full swing, and winter brings with it some bad weather & right now there’s a massive blizzard in parts of the country! Kids may love to play outside in the snow or go puddle jumping in the rain, but sooner or later you’ll be faced with bad weather that keeps kids inside for most of the day. Puzzles and cartoons will only get you so far; eventually kids need something active and exciting to get out some of their abundant energy. Keep these game ideas up your sleeve to avoid getting pent up with bored children.

Cardboard castle – this was one of my boys’ favorites when they were little!

What’s even better than a fort made out of pillows and blankets? A castle made out of cardboard boxes. Save any boxes you have leftover from Christmas or from other deliveries; the bigger the better. We found our best boxes at the appliance store.  We let them know what we were doing & they saved them for us!  Let your kids arrange these boxes into a castle of their own design. You can help by cutting doorways between the boxes, and kids can get creative by decorating the outside with whatever arts and crafts supplies you have on hand.

I love the two tutorials (links below).  Using cardboard in a hallway is genius!  The second tutorial is dear to my heart.  I helped build and grew up in a geodesic dome when I was little.  So I adore that there are instructions to make a cardboard version.  LOOOVE it, and your kids will, too!

freeze-dancing

Freeze Dancing

This is like musical chairs without the chairs. Pick out one of your kids’ (or your) favorite songs, play it, and dance like no one’s watching. We put on songs of the composers we’re studying.  Before we start dancing, we all have to yell which composer it is.

Let out your silly side and encourage your kids to show off their goofiest dance moves. Then pause the music: everyone has to freeze in whatever position they’re in. This game is sure to burn off some energy and to bring out some laughs.  My boys are now 12 and 15, and they still love this game!  This is a fun way to switch off nasty attitudes, too. ♥  Seriously look at those sweet faces!  My kids are awesome, and crazy, and adorable!

Tape Traffic

Do your kids have toy cars or toy animals they love to move around? Let them design their very own road system. Kids can use painter’s tape or masking tape to plot out roads all around the house: on the floor, onto the furniture, and maybe even on you. Especially if you have older children, they might really enjoy planning out and designing a complicated road system complete with city landmarks along the way. Because it’s painter’s or masking tape, it’s easy to clean up, so they can make roads as long as they want. Then they can have fun racing their toys all along the roads.

pillow-sumo-wrestling

Pillow Sumo Wrestling

Oh my goodness, look at our youngest’s toes!!!  He’s seriously into this.  Do you have some roughhousing lovers? Try pillow sumo wrestling to let them get it out of their system without getting hurt. Equip your kids with some adult-sized t-shirts, and stuff them with pillows. You may want to place some extra pillows around the “wrestling” area (don’t do it anywhere they can land on something hard or sharp). Then let your kids bounce around to their hearts’ content. You’ll probably want to supervise this one carefully to make sure no one gets hurt, but as long as no one gets carried away, it can be definitely get the cold weather wiggles out!  These are my boys – even as big kids, they like bouncing around with their brother!

So enjoy!  Have some fun with your kids, no matter what their age…they’ll love being a little creative and a little crazy with you!

January Garnet Birthstone

January Garnet Birthstones
I am a January baby, so naturally garnets are some of my very favorite gemstones! January’s birthstone is the beautiful garnet – a stone that varies in color from a deep burgundy, to a lighter purple-red, yellow to orange to green, and on the rare occasion even blue.

Keepsake Pearl and Birthstone Necklace.Pearl and Birthstone January Garnet Bracelet.

Garnets have always been one of the most popular gemstones. In fact, they’ve been used in jewelry and decorations for over a thousand years. In ancient Rome and medieval Europe, people used garnets in their jewelry, decorative weapon fittings, and more. The gemstone has a long history of making objects beautiful for kings, queens, and nobles of the past. Maybe that’s why garnets always seem so royal to me. They have a rich color that makes them simply majestic. I can certainly see why people all over the world have loved them for centuries.

At Little Girl’s Pearls, your jewelry adorned with garnets features a lovely burgundy color with a gorgeous purple tone. The effect is a gemstone that’s delicate and feminine. Garnets pair so well with pearls and silver but also look amazing with gold. It’s such a wonderfully versatile and beautiful gemstone.

Personalized Name Bracelet - Pearl and January Garnet

To me, garnet birthstone jewelry seems perfectly fitting for a royal princess. It, of course, makes a lovely gift for those of us lucky enough to be born in January. Whether you were born in January or not, everyone should get to feel like a beautiful princess donned in luxurious garnets!

10 sweet messages for new baby girl gift cards

10 sweet gift card messages for new baby girls and their parents

There’s nothing more wonderful than welcoming a new baby into the world. When my boys were born, my favorite time was when they fell asleep in my arms.  They are so snugly when they’re tiny!  A little one’s birth is a moment to celebrate not only for itself, but for the many years of joy and love to come.

I know that the weeks following the arrival of a precious little baby girl are going to be full of many irreplaceable moments:

  • the first time she smiles at you
  • when she wraps her tiny hand around your finger
  • when she stops crying as you hold her
  • laying your cheek in her precious head while she sleeps

Of course, there may also be some difficult moments (dirty diapers and loss of sleep are fairly unavoidable), but in your memories even those will become part of the joy of celebrating the arrival of this precious new little one.

Whether you are the mother, father, family, or friend of the family, you’ll want to remember these moments forever. You may also want to give a gift that shows your love for the baby girl and symbolizes the bond between you. Even though your heart may be full of emotions, it can often be hard to write a gift card that conveys your affection. You may want the entire family to recognize the love you attach to your gift, or you may hope that your new dear one will be able to look back on your note in the years to come. Either way, you want a gift card that is meaningful and sweet. I know how hard it can be to come up with the perfect message. You can use the following ideas verbatim or as inspiration for a lovely note to a beautiful baby girl. The meaning behind the pearl

A look back at the history of the pearl over the centuries. | Little Girl's Pearls

They are given as gifts for all sorts of special occasions, from weddings and graduations to christenings and anniversaries. Ancient mythology holds that they are connected directly with the moon. Some have been found that are over 7,000 years old.

What are we talking about? Pearls, of course!

Today we recognize pearls as unique accessories that make the perfect complement to outfits for many occasions, from school days to wedding ceremonies. But pearls are much more than just beautiful jewelry. They have a long and interesting history that has developed in step with human culture. Throughout history, civilizations all over the world have added their own contributions to the legacy of the pearl, making it one of the most storied gemstones in the world.

The meaning behind the pearl - the pearl over the centuries. | Name bracelets by Little Girl's Pearls

A Brief History of Pearls

To truly understand the meaning behind the pearl, we must look into the history of this precious stone. Though researchers once believed that the oldest pearls came from Asia, in 2012 a pearl was found in the United Arab Emirates with an estimated date of origin between 5550 BC and 5200 BC. Archaeologists believe that this pearl is roughly 7,500 years old, making it the oldest ever found.

In the early days, before the advent of cultured pearls made the gem more common, natural pearls were rare and expensive. In Ancient Rome, pearls were a sign of upper-class nobility commonly worn by society’s elite. Legend has it that the gems were so expensive in the Roman Republic that the general Vitellius was able to finance an entire military campaign simply by selling one of his mother’s pearl earrings.

To prove to the Roman ruler Mark Antony that she could host the most lavish and expensive dinner in history, the pharaoh Cleopatra is said to have dissolved a pearl from her ear into a cup of vinegar, which she then drank in front of the astonished Roman leader.

During the Age of Discovery, explorers and trade companies found North America’s rivers ripe with natural pearls and quickly began exporting them back to Europe, where they became hugely popular with the aristocracy. In 1612, the Duke of the Saxon Kingdom of Germany enacted a law declaring that only members of the royal court had the right to wear pearls.

How cultured pearls were invented - by Little Girl's Pearls

The Invention of Cultured Pearls

The world of pearls was changed forever at the beginning of the 20th century. Japanese pearl farmer Kokichi Mikimoto and his wife invented a method of making oysters produce pearls on demand by inserting a small piece of membrane into the shell. The oyster then secretes a nacre coating known as mother of pearl over the membrane, creating a pearl.

Two other men in Japan came up with methods of culturing pearls independently of Mikimoto: a government researcher by the name of Tokichi Nishikawa and a carpenter named Tatsuhei Mise. During the early 1900s, each of these three men received patents for their methods of culturing pearls.

These developments in pearl culturing techniques made pearls much more available to the mainstream. Thanks to the efforts of these men, pearls today can be found in a variety of styles and colors.

Savvy pearl buyers understand that the cultural importance of a set of pearls depends on many things, including its color.

the meaning behind the pearl - pearl colors and their meanings

Pearl Colors and their Meanings

Pearls can come in dozens of different colors, but some of the more popular varieties are:

  • White: probably the most common pearl color, a white pearl signifies innocence and purity. They also indicate a new beginning, which is why they are worn by brides or given as a gift to newborns.
  • Pink: this pearl color symbolizes love, passion and romance. Pink is a popular color for pearls given to a spouse or romantic partner.
  • Blue: blue pearls represent dedication. These pearls are considered a symbol of eternity and longevity.
  • Black: black pearls are extremely rare. They are said to bring good luck and protection from evil forces.

Like the people who wear them, each pearl is different: in fact, the Latin word for pearl is literally translated as “unique.” Choosing a pearl for a special someone can be challenging, which is why I’d love to help you choose a pearl that perfectly conveys your feelings about a mother, daughter, sister, or your beautiful bride!

The meaning behind the pearl - where did the pearl come from | Little Girls Pearls

About Little Girl’s Pearls
I have been helping people choose quality freshwater pearls for themselves and their loved ones for over twelve years. My passion for pearls comes not just from their elegant sheen, but from their significance to the wearer. Our pearls are precious keepsakes that are tied to some of the most treasured memories in a woman’s life.

Everyone who wears a pearl has a small part of cultural history with them, but they also have a precious stone that is significant in a very special and unique way. I love helping new brides, mothers of newborns, and spouses with their efforts to choose the perfect pearl, one that will help remind them of their special bond for the rest of time.

Whether you’re giving them as a gift or plan on wearing them yourself, I hope you’ll let me help you add your own personal chapter to the story of pearls and their meaning!

June – Pearl Birthstone

Happy Birthday, June babies!

June birthstone - pearl

You lucky duckies, your birthstones are classic pearls and gorgeous moonstones!  What a beautiful combination.

I can’t help but love June—that magical time of year simply bursting at the seams with weddings, anniversaries and graduations. Why not make an impression as dazzling as the summer sunshine with this month’s official birthstone: the simple, chic and always classy pearl!

Little Girl's Pearls - beautiful pearl bracelet for June's birthstone

It makes perfect sense the especially social-centric month of June is associated with the pearl. As Jackie Kennedy, former First Lady and legendary fashonista icon, so eloquently put: “Pearls are always appropriate.” Needless to say, I wholeheartedly agree with Jackie! And thanks to a recent resurgence of popularity in mainstream fashion, thanks to stars such as Coco Chanel to Sarah Jessica Parker, they continue to remain fashionable, elegant and unique keepsakes cherished by runway models and casual dressers alike. Throughout history, pearls have been associated with love, innocence and purity, making them an ideal gift to symbolize a “new beginning” in life such as a birth, romance, anniversary, wedding or graduation. No other gem conveys the promise, depth and gravitas of eternal love in the subtle, yet elegant way that a pearl does.

June Birthstone - Pearl

Pearls are distinctly versatile. Their multitude of colors, sizes and styles make pearls adaptable to any occasion—both as a gift and as an accessory. From the romantic nuances of the pink pearl immaculately expressing the everlasting passion and ultimate commitment to your significant other on an anniversary or engagement, to the bold, extremely rare black pearl long believed to bring good luck and protection from evil that makes it a superb gift for new grads facing the challenges of adult life—I can assist you in creating the impeccable ensemble for your unique occasion.

June birthstone - pearl

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that all pearls are the same! Little Girl’s Pearls has over a decade of experience creating personalized and unique gifts that will be cherished by you and your loved ones for years to come. I love helping you choose the perfect gem—whether you’re looking for the perfect gift to memorialize that special person’s important life event with a thoughtful, lasting keepsake. From brides and flower girls to new mothers and grandmothers to recent grads (the possibilities are endless!), or you’re searching for just the right accessory to accentuate your outfit, be it a classic “Southern Belle” look or an elegant appearance that would look right at home on the red carpet, you really can’t go wrong with pearls!

If you’re anything like me, you look at the calendar on February 13th, grumble a little & then surf Pinterest for quick & easy, but cute Valentine’s cards!  This year I decided to take things into my own two little hands – EARLY – and get them finished and ready for Valentine’s Day.

I wanted something colorful, whimsical and a bit more handcrafted than the cards you frantically buy in a box at the grocery store.  But I also wanted something that was easy, quick and had a bit of character.  My sweet sister is an amazing artist.  Years ago she hand-drew and watercolored these sweet little animals for our Whimsy Kisses shop.  I thought they were just perfect for this project!

Simply print on a piece of card stock or thick matte photo paper and cut them out.  Have your kiddos (or you) fill out the “to” and “from” and voila – sweet little Valentine cards that are both unique and surprisingly frugal!  If you’re feeling extra crafty, you can punch a hole in them, add a bit of twine or ribbon & tie them to a treat like a lollipop, a cutie orange or a small toy.  Hooray!  Valentine’s Day is checked off your never ending “to do” list!

frilly florals

I am seriously a sucker for a gorgeous flower arrangement.  When I saw the bouquet created by Lace & Lilies for the Vintage Whites Market, I just swooned!  I am not near either of these lovely businesses, so I must live vicariously through facebook, blogs & pinterest.

There’s just something so beautiful and quaint about garden tea roses, larkspur, peonies and ranunculas!  Add in a vintage tin and it’s just plain over the moon for me!  I have a wonderful little spice tin collection from my sweet grandma.  I’ve thought of oodles of great projects to make with them, but popping in a lovely garden bouquet was so easy and turned out incredibly sweet.

What about you?  What are your favorite quaint businesses that you have to visit only through pictures?
