September Birthstone – Sapphire

September's beautiful blue birthstone - sapphire | Little Girl's Pearls ♥

Happy Birthday, you gorgeous September babies!!

September feels like a month of new beginnings.  That might be my former teacher life showing through…but now that my boys are Jr. High & High School (WHAT?!?!) I swear our schedules are jam-packed as the school year starts.  September is definitely feeling like a big old “switch” in our lives and schedules.  So here’s to new beginnings and a little bit of history on the gorgeous sapphire – the beautiful birthstone of this new month.

Sapphires have been adored for centuries, and prominent figures throughout history have worn them often. In the Middle Ages, bishops and other top members of the clergy wore sapphires, which they associated with Heaven. The British royal family has also worn sapphires frequently. One of the most famous sapphires in the world, St. Edward’s Sapphire, is set into the Imperial State Crown. And of course, Princess Diana’s ♥ engagement work, worn now by Duchess Catherine Middleton, features a sapphire surrounded by diamonds. You don’t have to be a queen or princess to wear sapphires, but they may just make you feel like royalty.

While sapphires come in a beautiful array of colors, blue sapphires range in color from a very light blue to a very dark navy, and some stones have hints of green or purple. The gemstones I use in handcrafting jewelry are a natural light blue shade, similar to a clear sky just as it starts to darken at dusk. If you’d like a darker, deeper stone, I also have dyed sapphires available. I think that both shades look absolutely beautiful when paired with pearls; the white complements the blue color perfectly.

If you or a special little girl in your life was born in September, you have a great excuse to wear sapphires. Even if September isn’t your birthstone, though, you don’t need an excuse. Sapphires are simply beautiful stones that always look lovely and elegant.

August Birthstone – Peridot

Peridot - August Birthstone | the history of the beautiful green gem for all of you August babies! Little Girl's Pearls ♥

August has a special place in my heart.  Our youngest was born in August & my dad’s birthday is August.  The weather is always spectacular here on the Central Coast of California and it seems that we have oodles of great marshmallow roasts and family chats sitting on the patio watching the stars.

Peridot and Pearl bracelet - a perfect gift to celebrate her August birthday! | Little Girl's Pearls ♥

Peridot (pronounced per-i-doh) is a wonderful bright green color that is reminiscent of sunlight through the leaves.  My silly spell check doesn’t even recognize Peridot as a word!  Whatever…I think it’s beautiful.  Some of the amazing facts I found while researching the history of peridot include:

  • Peridot has been mined for over 3,500 years!
  • Peridot is the only gemstone (other than diamond) that is created in the magma of the earth’s upper mantle (about 20 – 55 miles below the surface of the earth).
  • Peridot is brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions that push the magma up through the crust of the earth.
  • Many believe the “emeralds” in the ornate jewelry of Cleopatra was actually peridot stones.

I find it interesting that some of the properties believed to be possessed by peridot are that it is thought to ward off anxiety and help with being successful in relationships.

Whether or not the gorgeous pale green stone contains mystical properties is definitely out-shined by it’s true beauty and earthiness.  If you’re lucky enough to be born in August, you get to claim the beautiful peridot as your birthstone.

February Amethyst Birthstone

February Birthstone Amethyst

Amethyst, February’s magical birthstone, is one of my favorite gemstones of all time. I love its beautiful purple color, which makes it really stand out when mingled with lustrous pearls in a piece of jewelry. Amethyst is a kind of quartz, and its color can vary from a pale pinkish violet to a true deep purple to green.

The stone’s beautiful color means that it’s been cherished throughout history. Ancient Egyptians and Romans used amethysts to make stunning engraved gems, Ancient Greeks used them to decorate elaborate drinking glasses, and European soldiers made protective amulets out of them. Many of these people believed that amethysts could protect them and keep them calm. I’m not surprised that people of the past thought that amethysts must be full of magical properties. The color is so beautiful that it’s hard to believe it’s natural; maybe there is some magic hidden away in there after all.

Magic or no, I know that little girls love the color of amethysts. Who wouldn’t love that gorgeous purple color? It looks beautiful on its own, and it also looks wonderful when surrounded by shiny pearls and sparkly silver jewelry. When set in gold, an amethyst looks like it should belong to a queen or king. It’s a simply beautiful birthstone, with a color that’s magical.
