June Birthstone – Pearl Moonstone Alexandrite

You lucky ducky girls who are born in June are lucky enough to have three birthstones!  {Pearl ♥ Moonstone ♥ Alexandrite}  While I obviously love pearls (I get to play with pearls every single day – lucky me), I also have a great appreciation for all three of the sparkly, stunning June birthstones.

Moonstone is a semi-transparent stone, and I think it is definitely one of the best at capturing light in the most beautiful way.  It gives off a milky white light that can also include little flashes of blue when the light hits it just right.  Moonstone often looks as if it has a little bit of a glow to it.

It’s easy to see how the stone got its name; moonstone seems to have captured the stunning light of the moon.  In ancient Rome, people used to believe that you could identify the different phases of the moon within moonstone.  While we don’t believe that the stone physically changes appearance with the moon’s phases anymore, it certainly does have an ethereal, almost otherworldly appearance.

When it is micro-faceted into the beautiful little gemstones I use in my jewelry designs, it plays with the light beautifully.  I love pairing it with silver and pearls as the moonstone seems to throw light against the other surfaces of the pieces.  It’s so much fun to turn moonstone jewelry to different angles and see how it changes as it catches the light.

If you’re on the lookout for the most traditional June birthstone, pearl is your girl.  I absolutely adore creating pearl birthstone jewelry for all the lovely June birthday babies!  The pearls I use are genuine cultured freshwater pearls in a luscious creamy white color, natural pink, and sometimes I even have some peachy or lavender pearls available.  Pearls have the most amazing timeless elegance and have traditionally symbolized purity and innocence – pearl jewelry makes a perfect baby gift.

Personalized June Pearl Birthstone Bracelets for Girls

Alexandrite has a controversial history that started all the way back in 1834 in Imperial Russia.  While a miner was working in an emerald mine, he came across a gem that he thought was an emerald, but once he held it up to the light, he realized it was something new entirely.  It flashed different colors depending on the light.  It is fabled that the stone got its name from Alexander II because it was discovered on his birthday.

The Russian mines were exhausted in the early 20th century leaving almost a century until a new deposit was discovered, this time in Brazil.  Natural Alexandrite is extremely rare, and incredibly expensive.  So, in my jewelry creations, I use genuine Swarvoski Austrian crystals in the pale lavender of Alexandrite, so she can celebrate her June birthday without the crazy price tag!  Not to mention, because they are represented with a crystal, they are extra sparkly!

Whether you are searching for a classic, traditional June birthstone gift in pearls or something more ethereal like the sweet moonstone with the blue flashes, or the beautiful and elegant lavender alexandrite, you lovely June birthday girls will find meaningful, stunning birthstone jewelry at Little Girls’ Pearls.

May Birthstone – Emerald

May’s birthstone – the beautifully green emerald, is one of the rarest and most popular gemstones.  That doesn’t surprise me in the least!  The gorgeously vibrant green color always catches my eye.  My dear friend {hello, J ♥} has an emerald in her wedding ring, and it’s absolutely stunning.

I think that an emerald was the perfect choice for May’s birthstone because it embodies the life and color of spring.  In May, you’ll see the deep green emerald reflected in spring tulips, in the foliage of trees, and in the grass that’s finally recovering from its long winter’s nap.  Emeralds are the color of new life, perfect for May!  That’s probably why emeralds have been associated with rebirth for centuries.  For me, emeralds are a bright symbol of new beginnings, growth, and happy energy.

Adorable Pearl & May Birthstone – Emerald Necklace

A fun historical tidbit about emeralds is that Cleopatra was said to be all but fanatical about them.  The first known emerald mine was a Greek mine near the Red Sea.  Cleopatra claimed it as her own.  The ancient Egyptians fervently believed that emeralds could treat eye diseases, and were the symbol of fertility and rebirth.  That’s one of the reasons why Egyptian pharaohs insisted on being buried with emeralds – the hope of rebirth.  Visiting heads of state were said to have gifted Cleopatra with emeralds that had been carved in her likeness – oh man, I’d love to see one of those!

Darling Pearl & May Emerald Crystal Personalized Name Bracelet

In the emerald jewelry that I lovingly create, I diligently attempt to capture that spirit of life, energy, and renewal.  Emeralds look beautiful nestled among pearls, as a pair of delicate earrings, or as a personalized pendant necklace.  At Little Girl’s Pearls, all of my birthstone jewelry has the option to be created with genuine gemstones that are micro-faceted to give them that little bit of twinkly sparkle.  The emeralds I use are a beautiful lighter green color, un-dyed and natural.  I absolutely adore the varied hues and inclusions in these stones, they seem to speak a story all their own.

So I wish you the happiest of birthdays, you beautiful May babies!! ♥

September Birthstone – Sapphire

September's beautiful blue birthstone - sapphire | Little Girl's Pearls ♥

Happy Birthday, you gorgeous September babies!!

September feels like a month of new beginnings.  That might be my former teacher life showing through…but now that my boys are Jr. High & High School (WHAT?!?!) I swear our schedules are jam-packed as the school year starts.  September is definitely feeling like a big old “switch” in our lives and schedules.  So here’s to new beginnings and a little bit of history on the gorgeous sapphire – the beautiful birthstone of this new month.

September's Birthstone - Blue Sapphire & Pearl Necklace from Little Girl's Pearls ♥

Sapphires have been adored for centuries, and prominent figures throughout history have worn them often. In the Middle Ages, bishops and other top members of the clergy wore sapphires, which they associated with Heaven. The British royal family has also worn sapphires frequently. One of the most famous sapphires in the world, St. Edward’s Sapphire, is set into the Imperial State Crown. And of course, Princess Diana’s ♥ engagement work, worn now by Duchess Catherine Middleton, features a sapphire surrounded by diamonds. You don’t have to be a queen or princess to wear sapphires, but they may just make you feel like royalty.

Sapphire ~ September's Beautiful Birthstone ♥ Sapphire and Pearl bracelet for girls from Little Girl's Pearls

While sapphires come in a beautiful array of colors, blue sapphires range in color from a very light blue to a very dark navy, and some stones have hints of green or purple. The gemstones I use in handcrafting jewelry are a natural light blue shade, similar to a clear sky just as it starts to darken at dusk. If you’d like a darker, deeper stone, I also have dyed sapphires available. I think that both shades look absolutely beautiful when paired with pearls; the white complements the blue color perfectly.

If you or a special little girl in your life was born in September, you have a great excuse to wear sapphires. Even if September isn’t your birthstone, though, you don’t need an excuse. Sapphires are simply beautiful stones that always look lovely and elegant.

August Birthstone – Peridot

Peridot - August Birthstone | the history of the beautiful green gem for all of you August babies! Little Girl's Pearls ♥

August has a special place in my heart.  Our youngest was born in August & my dad’s birthday is August.  The weather is always spectacular here on the Central Coast of California and it seems that we have oodles of great marshmallow roasts and family chats sitting on the patio watching the stars.

Peridot and Pearl bracelet - a perfect gift to celebrate her August birthday! | Little Girl's Pearls ♥

Peridot (pronounced per-i-doh) is a wonderful bright green color that is reminiscent of sunlight through the leaves.  My silly spell check doesn’t even recognize Peridot as a word!  Whatever…I think it’s beautiful.  Some of the amazing facts I found while researching the history of peridot include:

  • Peridot has been mined for over 3,500 years!
  • Peridot is the only gemstone (other than diamond) that is created in the magma of the earth’s upper mantle (about 20 – 55 miles below the surface of the earth).
  • Peridot is brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions that push the magma up through the crust of the earth.
  • Many believe the “emeralds” in the ornate jewelry of Cleopatra was actually peridot stones.

Adorable keepsake pearl and peridot necklace - a lovely little gift for her August birthday. | Little Girl's Pearls ♥

I find it interesting that some of the properties believed to be possessed by peridot are that it is thought to ward off anxiety and help with being successful in relationships.

Gorgeous pearl and peridot birthstone post earrings for her August birthday! | Little Girl's Pearls ♥

Whether or not the gorgeous pale green stone contains mystical properties is definitely out-shined by it’s true beauty and earthiness.  If you’re lucky enough to be born in August, you get to claim the beautiful peridot as your birthstone.

March – Aquamarine birthstone

March Aquamarine Birthstone Jewelry

Aquamarine, the birthstone for March, has my favorite origin story. Legend says that the first aquamarine gemstone was found in the treasure chest of a beautiful mermaid. After just one look at an aquamarine stone, that’s no surprise; it seems to capture the essence of the sea. Depending on the stone’s color, it might remind you of the stormy Atlantic or breezy tropical waters. In fact, aquamarine has been associated with the ocean for centuries. Sailors carried them as lucky stones to protect them while at sea. Or maybe they were hoping they’d catch a glimpse of a mermaid who wanted her treasure back.

March Birthstone Aquamarine and Pearl Necklace

Aquamarine is known for being an even-toned stone with a vibrant shine. It’s one of the clearest gemstones, which means that it catches the light particularly well. It also has a strong hardness, which helps to prevent scratches. These qualities, combined with its beautiful color, have made aquamarine one of the most popular gemstones.

March birthstone aquamarine and pearl bracelet for girls

When I look at an aquamarine stone, it reminds me of tranquil Caribbean water with the sun shining through it. The natural gemstones I use have a lovely VERY pale, translucent color. This gives aquamarine jewelry a very subtle, pretty look. I love the way aquamarine looks with silver, and because it has an understated color, it also looks beautiful with colored pearls, such as pink or peach. For any little girl who loves the ocean or dreams of being a mermaid, a piece of aquamarine jewelry is sure to be a beloved gift.

February Amethyst Birthstone

February Birthstone Amethyst

Amethyst, February’s magical birthstone, is one of my favorite gemstones of all time. I love its beautiful purple color, which makes it really stand out when mingled with lustrous pearls in a piece of jewelry. Amethyst is a kind of quartz, and its color can vary from a pale pinkish violet to a true deep purple to green.

February - amethyst birthstone name bracelet. February amethyst and pearl earrings

The stone’s beautiful color means that it’s been cherished throughout history. Ancient Egyptians and Romans used amethysts to make stunning engraved gems, Ancient Greeks used them to decorate elaborate drinking glasses, and European soldiers made protective amulets out of them. Many of these people believed that amethysts could protect them and keep them calm. I’m not surprised that people of the past thought that amethysts must be full of magical properties. The color is so beautiful that it’s hard to believe it’s natural; maybe there is some magic hidden away in there after all.

Magic or no, I know that little girls love the color of amethysts. Who wouldn’t love that gorgeous purple color? It looks beautiful on its own, and it also looks wonderful when surrounded by shiny pearls and sparkly silver jewelry. When set in gold, an amethyst looks like it should belong to a queen or king. It’s a simply beautiful birthstone, with a color that’s magical.

January Garnet Birthstone

January Garnet Birthstones
I am a January baby, so naturally garnets are some of my very favorite gemstones! January’s birthstone is the beautiful garnet – a stone that varies in color from a deep burgundy, to a lighter purple-red, yellow to orange to green, and on the rare occasion even blue.

Keepsake Pearl and Birthstone Necklace.Pearl and Birthstone January Garnet Bracelet.

Garnets have always been one of the most popular gemstones. In fact, they’ve been used in jewelry and decorations for over a thousand years. In ancient Rome and medieval Europe, people used garnets in their jewelry, decorative weapon fittings, and more. The gemstone has a long history of making objects beautiful for kings, queens, and nobles of the past. Maybe that’s why garnets always seem so royal to me. They have a rich color that makes them simply majestic. I can certainly see why people all over the world have loved them for centuries.

At Little Girl’s Pearls, your jewelry adorned with garnets features a lovely burgundy color with a gorgeous purple tone. The effect is a gemstone that’s delicate and feminine. Garnets pair so well with pearls and silver but also look amazing with gold. It’s such a wonderfully versatile and beautiful gemstone.

To me, garnet birthstone jewelry seems perfectly fitting for a royal princess. It, of course, makes a lovely gift for those of us lucky enough to be born in January. Whether you were born in January or not, everyone should get to feel like a beautiful princess donned in luxurious garnets!

June – Pearl Birthstone

Happy Birthday, June babies!

June birthstone - pearl

You lucky duckies, your birthstones are classic pearls and gorgeous moonstones!  What a beautiful combination.

I can’t help but love June—that magical time of year simply bursting at the seams with weddings, anniversaries and graduations. Why not make an impression as dazzling as the summer sunshine with this month’s official birthstone: the simple, chic and always classy pearl!

Little Girl's Pearls - beautiful pearl bracelet for June's birthstone

It makes perfect sense the especially social-centric month of June is associated with the pearl. As Jackie Kennedy, former First Lady and legendary fashonista icon, so eloquently put: “Pearls are always appropriate.” Needless to say, I wholeheartedly agree with Jackie! And thanks to a recent resurgence of popularity in mainstream fashion, thanks to stars such as Coco Chanel to Sarah Jessica Parker, they continue to remain fashionable, elegant and unique keepsakes cherished by runway models and casual dressers alike. Throughout history, pearls have been associated with love, innocence and purity, making them an ideal gift to symbolize a “new beginning” in life such as a birth, romance, anniversary, wedding or graduation. No other gem conveys the promise, depth and gravitas of eternal love in the subtle, yet elegant way that a pearl does.

June Birthstone - Pearl

Pearls are distinctly versatile. Their multitude of colors, sizes and styles make pearls adaptable to any occasion—both as a gift and as an accessory. From the romantic nuances of the pink pearl immaculately expressing the everlasting passion and ultimate commitment to your significant other on an anniversary or engagement, to the bold, extremely rare black pearl long believed to bring good luck and protection from evil that makes it a superb gift for new grads facing the challenges of adult life—I can assist you in creating the impeccable ensemble for your unique occasion.
